Aber’s Great Get Together
Written by Al Frean on 31 May 2017
As communities get together to promote diversity and inclusivity Aberystwyth will have its own opportunity to celebrate the various cultures that make up the town on Saturday, 17 June. The Great Get Together is held on the anniversary of the death of MP Jo Cox and is supported by her family with the aim of bringing our communities together and celebrating all that unites us.
Cymru i Bawb and Morlan centre have come together with a host of local organisations with similar aims to co-ordinate a series of events that offers people the opportunity to come together and appreciate the importance of diversity and how it enriches our society.
Arwel Jones is Chair of Cymru i Bawb and explains the background to the day,
“Cymru i Bawb was originally established to promote the idea that all human beings should be respected without distinction, whatever their race, language, culture, religion, gender, sexuality or ability. We also believe that the rich cultural diversity of Wales should be celebrated and that often we do not appreciate the contribution different sections of the community can make to our modern society.
“Partnering with Morlan in taking our work forward was a natural progression and that has given us a platform to be a part of this important event to further highlight the richness of our present day society.”
During the day (17 June) various activities will be held across the town ranging from adhoc busking sessions by Côr Gobaith, a community lunch at St Paul’s organised by Aber Food Forum and Aber Food Surplus, a language exchange and children’s activities at the OldCollege and an evening concert at Morlan.
Janice de Haaff from Ceredigion People’s Assembly is co-ordinating the language exchange and believes this day is important in promoting the strengths of the town,
“We are fortunate in Aberystwyth to have a community made up of many diverse elements and that is something we should celebrate. The language exchange, for example, will be a relatively light hearted event to emphasise how different cultures live side by side and how that is something we should always appreciate as a very positive element of our mid Walescommunity.
“The Great Get Together is a wonderful opportunity for us to join forces and express clearly how we see our future.”
